There are no delays at the Bay Bridge in either direction, and traffic is flowing normally. The bridge is currently operating under a wind warning with sustained winds between 30 and 39 mph. Drivers of house trailers, box trailers, and other vehicles vulnerable to high winds are advised to use caution when crossing. Additionally, two-way traffic operations cannot be put into effect at this time.

These are MDTA’s policy thresholds, not a reading of the current restriction. Sustained winds must persist for at least 10 continuous minutes; gusts must persistently exceed the listed threshold over 15 minutes.

Sustained wind
Use caution with trailers, motorcycles, loaded roof racks, and other wind-sensitive vehicles.
Or: gusts persistently above 30 mph.
Limited restrictions
40–49 mph
Sustained wind
House trailers and empty box trailers are prohibited. Police may turn away other vehicles that cannot cross safely.

Full restrictions
Above 50 mph
Sustained wind
Only cars, pickups, flatbed trailers, commercial buses, and heavily loaded tractor-trailers may cross. Tractor-box trailer combinations must have a gross weight of at least 64,000 lb.

Traffic holds / closure
Above 55 mph
Sustained wind
MDTA may stop all traffic. Sudden dangerous winds can also trigger a hold.

Two-way (contraflow) operations put opposing directions on the same span. MDTA prohibits that lane arrangement during wind warnings/restrictions, fog, or precipitation; this does not by itself mean the whole bridge is closed. Source: MDTA wind policy. Reviewed September 7, 2026.

Do not infer permission from a low wind reading on a weather app. Check the active MDTA restriction and call BaySpan before approaching. Follow police directions if your vehicle is turned away.
